Don’t You Know It’s Not Christmas?
The local easy listening station is great because it calms the baby when riding in the car. However it becomes less great when it’s Halloween and Christmas music is playing. Thanksgiving is the next major holiday and normally the Christmas music starts the day of or the day after Thanksgiving. I’ve recognized a distinct lack of recognition of Thanksgiving for years now. The Halloween candy goes on sale and the Christmas products come out. But the music didn’t start until after Thanksgiving.
This year everyone is so obsessed with the down economy that they’re doing everything they can to get people to spend spend spend. We have to remind people that Christmas is only two months away so they get out and spend all their money buying a bunch of stuff.
Meanwhile, there’s lonely Thanksgiving in the middle of it all telling people to STOP and be thankful for what they do have. They shouldn’t be worrying about what they don’t have so they can put it on a list. They shouldn’t be worrying about what others don’t have so they can buy it for them.
Thanksgiving is the last strong hold of sanity that makes people think about what they have. And if we give that up, it’s no wonder people are depressed and the econony is down. It used to be you’d gather everyone together and think about all the good things and the insanity would start the next morning as stores offered ridiculous sales.
Now the insanity has already stated. And I don’t think one day is going to be enough to bring everything back into perspective.
